Guild Wars 2 Item Upgrade

Item upgrade, also called "upping," improves an item's stats. Each upgrade increment provides an increase in linearity of any stat.

Players can recycle six items at once to get a gauge of the upgraded component of each item. The cost of recycling items scales depending on their rarity and level.

Upgrade components

In Guild Wars 2, an item upgrade is a way to increase the stats on your armor and weapons. This can be done through various methods such as the use of upgrade components and also upgrading an item's mark level or rarity. Almost all weapons can be upgraded using an upgrade to a prefix like an insignia or rune, and a lot of them are upgraded by a suffix upgrade. These upgrades change the name of the item to add an adjective, for example 'Radiant' or 'Minor Vigor.' The exceptions are the non-inscribable wands, the shields and foci from the Prophecies and Factions campaigns, which cannot be upgraded with any kinds of mods at all.

Glyphs

This is the highest value that the glyph can improve a stat by and not the amount it actually increases the stat by. The actual value of the glyph is determined by the tier and quality of the item you are creating it for.

Most upgrade components slotted into items cannot be repaired or replaced without dismantling the gear in question, with the exception of legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a rune or glyph you don't want to use, but it's not been applied to gear yet, you can move the item to a different piece by selecting the Upgrade Glyphs menu in the Glyphs Panel. This will create the new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.

If you are looking to remove a glyph from a piece of you must salvage it using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. The item where the glyph is installed will be destroyed, however the upgraded item can be salvaged by removing the glyph fragments.
