Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a range of members. They can be bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaging with them enough often. This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is determined the breeding process can begin.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, pledged to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean and not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and are close to their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

As with any species of animal, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and even meet the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale, which died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
