Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and find ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not involved enough with them. If they aren't socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the Blondie scarlet macaw bird does feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that are fond of playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make wonderful companions for children.

They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near children who might be startled by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor in a plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who bond with their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal issue.
