Lolita’s Personality

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor in a plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself and not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.
