Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate tightly packed rooms very efficiently in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera that can see around corners.

It's still a good deal for those whose office or home has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save some money. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used while you're at work, or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. If you need to, the mopping pad can be swapped for one that is wet in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best rated robot vacuum robotic hoover for carpets, but it falls behind some competitors when it comes to deep cleaning.

It also did an excellent job cleaning a range of floors and rooms with mixed flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog turds, socks, shoes and cables.

It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy models of the competitors. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has an intuitive mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device which could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you try to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and some extra cost, this is a very powerful two-in-one that will satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that will let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and drys the mop pads.

The smart robot uses LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floorplans and identify obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner has an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house based on how dirty these areas are.

If you have a larger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home must be cleaned by using the app or voice control. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. Additionally a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with a single pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tested. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and best robot hoover a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping session that collects data about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
