Item Upgrades: A Simple Definition

The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading the performance of them. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item upgrades that they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of games and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. Alternately, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components in them with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage an armored item upgrades or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the degree of upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it should be heavier.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra number of health points, while others make it more powerful and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item level upgrade can receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as illustrated in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and Item Upgrader Mod magic, Item upgrader Mod which are shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees for use. These are indicated as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either constantly updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be obtained by exploring the area and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to higher level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide a significant improvements in stats and are worth the investment, particularly for one-handed weapons.

Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will significantly increase its defense values however, the user must be aware that increasing its weight will drastically reduce its speed and agility. This is why it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the added defense is usually not worth the extra weight and power costs of the upgrades required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of a weapon. For example an upgrade can enhance the damage caused by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Certain firearms also have upgrades that improve their innate capabilities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).

Most weapon upgrades require three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade for applying. They can be obtained by completing side quests or by killing a certain number of bosses and monsters.

To upgrade a weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade You must go to the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a specific amount of bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars required to complete it. The cost of upgrades will be lower if have more than one of the relevant upgrade materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2: Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could continue doing this until you reached a maximum upgrade level for your equipment or weapon, after which the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this but the process is based on RNG and low on agency. It is better to purchase gear with low levels of upgrade, but high base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a better chance of giving you the highest level of blessings and perks.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they are most likely to use to allow them to progress quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons their squadmates use to make them stronger. Shepard, for example should upgrade his M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to boost the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in weapons and armor. Jewelry crafting is the process of making them, in which you combine gemstones with specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the level of the jewel, the better its secondary effect. These reagents can be found around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the jewel it will give different stat boosts when it is inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

The Jeweler can craft all kinds of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones that you must be at certain levels to gain. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without damaging the original. However, you can only replace one jewel in a piece of equipment only once.

Utilizing more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother, and is often done for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a harder surface than metal so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to them.

In addition to the upgrades mentioned above players can also obtain glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. They offer a small benefit and can be swapped out at any time but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold and a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as aegis or traits cannot be exchanged and can only be found through an upgrade extractor or salvaging with the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that offer an array of tiny but valuable benefits to your hero. They can be obtained in the areas of starting as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, or by completing road interactions. They may also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased on the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to evade. Then, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player acquires weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be utilized on any device. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't fighting. This allows the hero to be more efficient while inactive. It can also make up for the lack of a strong slots in the team or talent tree that are normally filled by the hero's Best item upgrader stats.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future, then any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is true especially if you are looking to upgrade multiple stats on an item upgrader. It is better to upgrade one important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red trinket at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however they will select a pink or green ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices can impact a hero's ability to control the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will discover other trinkets in form trophies and rewards throughout the game. They can be obtained by completing certain milestones in the story. For example, completing the main quest for a chapter or beating a boss. You can see them by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
