For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great deal, especially if your home or office has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also quiet and works when you're at work or in school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It also features self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also happens to be its smartest, with advanced features including Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models like the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work, or during the night when you are trying to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, although it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are similarly capable and look better. It also mops using a single pad and a reciprocating movement which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've tested. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
