Upgrades to items are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to the more modernized Common or Magic equipment because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be applied to weapon and armor items. They boost the performance of the item upgrader that they are connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components within them by using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can absorb. Upgrading a piece of armor to maximum upgrade level will boost its ability to absorb damage. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it must be more heavy.

All kinds of jewels can be made at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a high enough level to be able to get the privilege of having them. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped with another jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. You are able to replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.

It is normal to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels also create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, which means that repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

This is especially true when you are looking to upgrade multiple stats on an item upgrading. It is more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red trinket at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however, will choose a green or a pink ward, based on the matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.
